“If you attach an electroencephalograph to a person’s head, you can record the person’s brainwave activity. An awake and relaxed person generates alpha waves, … consistent oscillations at about 10 cycles per second. An alert person generates beta waves, …. about twice as fast.  During sleep, two slower patterns called theta waves and delta waves take over. Theta waves have oscillations in the 3.5 to 7 cycle per second range… delta waves are … below 3.5 cycles per second. As a person falls asleep and sleep deepens, the brainwave patterns slow down. The slower the brain wave patterns, the deeper the sleep – a person deep in delta wave sleep is hardest to wake …. At several points during the night, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep occurs, and brainwaves during this period speed up to awake levels (alpha or beta).”

Sleep Stages: Measures

Sleep Stages: Waking through Stage 2

“….When awake, most people exhibit brain wave, (EEG) patterns that can be classified into two types of waves, beta and alpha. Beta waves are those associated with day to day wakefulness. These waves are the highest in frequency and lowest in amplitude, and… more desynchronous than other waves…. the waves are not very consistent in their pattern. This desynchrony makes sense given that day to day mental activity consists of many cognitive, sensory, and motor activities and experiences, and, thus, when awake, we are mentally desynchronous …”

“During periods of relaxation, while… awake,  …brain waves become slower, increase in amplitude and become more synchronous. These types of waves are called alpha waves. … such brain waves are often associated with states of relaxation and peacefulness during meditation and biofeedback….. recent evidence indicates that activities that promote alpha wave activity, appear to have positive health benefits.”

“The first stage of sleep is characterized by theta waves, which are even slower in frequency and greater in amplitude than alpha waves. The difference between relaxation and stage 1 sleep is gradual and subtle. As the sleeper moves to stage 2 sleep theta wave activity continues, interspersed with two unusual wave phenomena. These phenomena, which occur periodically every minute or so, and are defining characteristics of stage 2 sleep, are termed sleep spindles and K complexes … The former is a sudden increase in wave frequency, and the latter is a sudden increase in wave amplitude. Stages 1 and 2 are relatively “light” stages of sleep. In fact, if someone is… [wakened] during one of these stages, he or she will often report not being asleep…”

Sleep Stages: Delta Sleep, REM, and the Sleep Cycle

“During a normal nights sleep a sleeper passes from the theta waves of stage 1 and 2, to the delta waves of stage 3 and 4. Delta waves are the slowest and highest amplitude brain waves. There is no real division between stages 3 and 4 except that, typically, stage 3 is considered delta sleep in which less than 50 percent of the waves are delta waves, and in stage 4 more than 50 percent of the waves are delta waves. Delta sleep is our deepest sleep, the point when our brain waves are least like waking. Consequently, it is most difficult stage in which to wake sleepers,… when they are awakened they are usually sleepy and disoriented…. delta sleep is when sleep walking and sleep talking is most likely to occur.”

This stage gets its name from the darting eye movements that accompany it (rapid eye movement), as indicated by the EOG…. characterized by a sudden and dramatic loss of muscle tone, which is measured by the EMG. In fact, the skeletal muscles of a person during REM sleep are effectively paralyzed. When a sleeper in a research lab begins to exhibit the physiological indices of R.E.M sleep, and they are awakened, the great majority of the time they will report that they were having a vivid, story-like, dream. During other stages, on the other hand, they normally do not report dreaming….”

The vivid recall that could be elicited in the middle of the night when a subject was awakened while his eyes were moving rapidly was nothing short of miraculous. It [seemed to open] … an exciting new world to the subjects whose only previous dream memories had been the vague morning-after recall. Now, instead of perhaps some fleeting glimpse into the dream world each night, the subjects could be tuned into the middle of as many as ten or twelve dreams every night.

“In a normal night’s sleep, a sleeper begins in stage 1, moves down through the stages, to stage 4, then back up through the stages, with the exception that stage 1 is replaced by REM, then the sleeper goes back down through the stages again. One cycle, from stage 1 to REM takes approximately ninety minutes. This cycle is repeated throughout the night, with the length of REM periods increasing, and the length of delta sleep decreasing, until during the last few cycles there is no delta sleep at all.”

Phone makers’ own scientists discover that bedtime use can lead to headaches, confusion and depression


“Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study…. “The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

“The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom – surveys suggest – use their phones late at night and who especially need sleep. Their failure to get enough can lead to mood and personality changes, ADHD-like symptoms, depression, lack of concentration and poor academic performance.”

“The study – carried out by scientists from the blue-chip Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden and from Wayne State University in Michigan, USA – is thought to be the most comprehensive of its kind….” Published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium and funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, representing the main handset companies, it has caused serious concern among top sleep experts, one of whom said that there was now “more than sufficient evidence” to show that the radiation “affects deep sleep.”

“The scientists studied 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45. Some were exposed to radiation that exactly mimicked what is received when using mobile phones; others were placed in precisely the same conditions, but given only “sham” exposure, receiving no radiation at all….The people who had received the radiation took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep, and spent less time in the deepest one. The scientists concluded: “The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected.”

“The embarrassed [manufacturers] played down the results, insisting – at apparent variance with this published conclusion – that its “results were inconclusive” and that “the researchers did not claim that exposure caused sleep disturbance”….”We did find an effect from mobile phones from exposure scenarios that were realistic. This suggests that they have measurable effects on the brain.”…”the radiation may activate the brain’s stress system, “making people more alert and more focused, and decreasing their ability to wind down and fall asleep”.

“About half of the people studied believed themselves to be “electrosensitive”, reporting symptoms such as headaches and impaired cognitive function from mobile phone use. But they proved to be unable to tell if they had been exposed to the radiation in the test.”…” This strengthens the conclusion of the study, as it disposes of any suggestion that knowledge of exposure influenced sleeping patterns. Even more significantly, it throws into doubt the relevance of studies the industry relies on to maintain that the radiation has no measurable effects.”…”A series of them … have similarly found that people claiming to be electrosensitive could not distinguish when the radiation was turned on in laboratory conditions, suggesting that they were not affected.”…”Critics have attacked the studies’ methodology, but the new findings deal them a serious blow. For they show that the radiation did have an effect, even though people could not tell when they were exposed.”

“It also complements other recent research. A massive study, following 1,656” … “teenagers for a year, found most of them used their phones after going to bed. It concluded that those who did this once a week were more than three times – and those who used them more often more than five times – as likely to be “very tired”….the director of [a] Sleep Centre, says: “There is now more than sufficient evidence, from a large number of reputable investigators who are finding that mobile phone exposure an hour before sleep adversely affects deep sleep.”  [Another director of a] Sleep Institute added: “Anything that disrupts the integrity of your sleep will potentially have adverse consequences in functioning during the day, such as grouchiness, difficulty concentrating, and in children hyperactivity and behaviour problems.”

“doctor involved in a recent international study that has found a link between cellular phones and cancer says she believes cell-phone use should be limited among children”….. “the study, which was conducted in 16 countries, says standards should be reassessed and tightened to prevent radiation from cell phones, and new technology should be developed to lessen radiation…current regulations do not relate to cancer as caused by radiation but to the health risks posed by the instrument heating up.”

“The time is past when it could be said that this technology does not cause damage; apparently it damages health,” …”Cell phones are already here, they have advantages and now we have to learn how to use them wisely.” …”The study…found a clear link between the use of cell phones and the development of cancerous and benign tumors in the saliva glands”….”The Israeli study examined all 460 patients who were diagnosed with benign and cancerous tumors of the saliva glands between 2001 and 2003. The patients were compared to a control group of 1,266 people in Israel who did not have tumors. All the participants filled out detailed questionnaires” ……”no increased risk of cancer was noted among the research group as a whole, comprised of patients who used cell phones to various extents. However, upon examining specific groups, they found that for those who tended to hold the phone on one side and who used the phone frequently or for prolonged periods, the risk of saliva-gland cancer increased by 50 to 58 percent compared to people who did not use a cell phone regularly. According to the research, the more this group used the cell phone, the greater their chance of contracting the disease.”

“The study also found a heightened risk among people who used their cell phone frequently and for prolonged periods in rural areas where there are relatively few antennas; the radiation emitted by the phone is higher is higher in these areas.”

“A number of studies in recent years indicate a rise in the risk of tumors in the auditory nerve, the brain and the saliva glands for long-time cell-phone users. However the present study shows the correlation more clearly. “It may be because in Israel we had a relatively large group of patients and because these were heavy users. In all the comparisons we made, use of cell phones was found to be much greater than the rest of the countries.”……”the findings underscored the argument that the “principle of preventive caution” should be applied to the use of cell phones. …”to test the correlation between cell-phone use and a disease that usually appears years after the exposure, many years might pass before a connection is securely proven between the phones and cancer or other health risks.”

Israeli study says regular mobile use increases tumour risk

“Regular use of mobile telephones increases the risk of developing tumours, a new scientific study …. revealed on Friday. ” “…the report .. …newspaper put the risk of developing a parotid gland tumour nearly 50 percent higher for frequent mobile phone users — more than 22 hours a month. The risk was still higher if users clamped the phone to the same ear, did not use hands-free devices or were in rural areas.” “Analysis restricted to regular users or to conditions that may yield higher levels of exposure (eg heavy use in rural areas) showed consistently elevated risks,” said an abstract …made available…. The study included 402 benign and 58 malignant incident cases of parotid gland tumour diagnosed in Israel at age 18 years or more, in 2001-2003. Probably, it has lost any chance to curb the use of mobiles by children and teenagers. Since the first report, mobile use by the young has doubled.”
