“KOLKATA: Cellphone towers could soon have to steer clear of schools and hospitals in Kolkata as the state environment department perceives them as a potential health and safety hazard.”

“A list of guidelines issued by the department has decreed that installation of base station antennas on the premises of schools and hospitals “may be avoided because children and patients are more susceptible to electromagnetic fields.”The order”…..”mentions that antennas be avoided in narrow lanes to reduce the risks caused by an earthquake or wind-related disaster.”…..”the antennas should be at least 3 metre from the nearest building and should not directly face it, and that the lower end of the towers should be at least 3 metres above the ground or roof. Barbed-wire fences should keep antenna sites barred to the public, it has said. And access to towers, the government has suggested, be kept to the minimum, even for maintenance personnel.”

“Cellphone firms have asked to put up warning signs and ensure that these are “clearly visible and identifiable”. A warning sign has been prescribed at the entrance of such zone. Such signs should carry cautionary notes discouraging people — even maintenance personnel — from staying too long in the zone. The environment department has suggested that the sign boards may contain the following text: Danger! RF radiation, Do not enter!

“Operators and maintenance personnel…should be protected from electromagnetic radiation, the state says. It has advised cellphone firms to educate personnel on the possible hazards from these devices.”

“Cellphone service providers were guarded in their response”….”researchers felt it was still too early to reach a conclusion ….You need to study an entire generation to come to a definite conclusion. But precautions are always welcome”…”There were complaints from several districts. Many schools said mobile towers were being erected on their roofs and in nearby areas….”

Phone makers’ own scientists discover that bedtime use can lead to headaches, confusion and depression

“Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study…. “The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

“The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom – surveys suggest – use their phones late at night and who especially need sleep. Their failure to get enough can lead to mood and personality changes, ADHD-like symptoms, depression, lack of concentration and poor academic performance.”

“The study – carried out by scientists from the blue-chip Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden and from Wayne State University in Michigan, USA – is thought to be the most comprehensive of its kind….” Published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium and funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, representing the main handset companies, it has caused serious concern among top sleep experts, one of whom said that there was now “more than sufficient evidence” to show that the radiation “affects deep sleep.”

“The scientists studied 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45. Some were exposed to radiation that exactly mimicked what is received when using mobile phones; others were placed in precisely the same conditions, but given only “sham” exposure, receiving no radiation at all….The people who had received the radiation took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep, and spent less time in the deepest one. The scientists concluded: “The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected.”

“The embarrassed [manufacturers] played down the results, insisting – at apparent variance with this published conclusion – that its “results were inconclusive” and that “the researchers did not claim that exposure caused sleep disturbance”….”We did find an effect from mobile phones from exposure scenarios that were realistic. This suggests that they have measurable effects on the brain.”…”the radiation may activate the brain’s stress system, “making people more alert and more focused, and decreasing their ability to wind down and fall asleep”.

“About half of the people studied believed themselves to be “electrosensitive”, reporting symptoms such as headaches and impaired cognitive function from mobile phone use. But they proved to be unable to tell if they had been exposed to the radiation in the test.”…” This strengthens the conclusion of the study, as it disposes of any suggestion that knowledge of exposure influenced sleeping patterns. Even more significantly, it throws into doubt the relevance of studies the industry relies on to maintain that the radiation has no measurable effects.”…”A series of them … have similarly found that people claiming to be electrosensitive could not distinguish when the radiation was turned on in laboratory conditions, suggesting that they were not affected.”…”Critics have attacked the studies’ methodology, but the new findings deal them a serious blow. For they show that the radiation did have an effect, even though people could not tell when they were exposed.”

“It also complements other recent research. A massive study, following 1,656” … “teenagers for a year, found most of them used their phones after going to bed. It concluded that those who did this once a week were more than three times – and those who used them more often more than five times – as likely to be “very tired”….the director of [a] Sleep Centre, says: “There is now more than sufficient evidence, from a large number of reputable investigators who are finding that mobile phone exposure an hour before sleep adversely affects deep sleep.”  [Another director of a] Sleep Institute added: “Anything that disrupts the integrity of your sleep will potentially have adverse consequences in functioning during the day, such as grouchiness, difficulty concentrating, and in children hyperactivity and behaviour problems.”

How Cell Phones May Cause Autism

“Rates of autism, a disabling neurodevelopmental disorder, have increased nearly 60-fold since the late 1970s, with the most significant increases occurring in the past decade.”

“The cause of autism is unknown, although theories include such potential causes as:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Inability to clear heavy metals
  • Increased vulnerability to oxidative stress
  • Environmental exposures including mercury preservatives in vaccines
  • Trans-generational accumulation of toxic heavy metals”

“Now a groundbreaking new theory has been suggested by a study published in the Journal of the Australasian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine: electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi devices and other similar wireless technologies as an accelerating factor in autism.”

EMR May be the Missing Link

“The study, which involved over five years of research on children with autism and other membrane sensitivity disorders, found that EMR negatively affects cell membranes, and allows heavy metal toxins, which are associated with autism, to build up in your body. ”

“Meanwhile, the researchers pointed out that autism rates have increased concurrently along with the proliferation of cell phones and wireless use.”

“EMR, the researchers say, could impact autism by facilitating early onset of symptoms or by trapping heavy metals inside of nerve cells, which could accelerate the onset of symptoms of heavy metal toxicity and hinder therapeutic clearance of the toxins.”

Speaking in reference to the huge rise in autism rates, Dr. George Carlo, the study’s co-author, said, “A rise of this magnitude must have a major environmental cause. Our data offer a reasonable mechanistic explanation for a connection between autism and wireless technology.”

“They also suggest that EMR from wireless devices works in conjunction with environmental and genetic factors to cause autism.”…”the three largest factors at play are

  • Genetically determined detoxification capacity
  • Early insult to immune system via contaminated vaccines and
  • Being born with high levels of toxic burden and into a technologically advanced society riddled with ever increasing levels of radiation”

If you are sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies, it is becoming harder to know how to avoid them.  If you have physical problems that you do not understand, this could be part of the problem.

Ipods could make your heart Skip a Beat

“…portable music players caused pacemakers to malfunction in 50 percent of patients”

“…the biggest concern is that pacemakers store the history of a heart’s rhythms”…”If a physician was to go back and look at that (history), the physician might think that the patient was having abnormal heart rhythms,”…..One danger is that heart patients might be treated for conditions that aren’t really present… if an iPod stopped a pacemaker from working in a patient who was totally dependent on their pacemaker, it could cause the heart to stop…”

“Many electric devices — such as cell phones, appliances, microwave ovens and high tension wires — can produce the same effect”… “doctors tell their patients not to put any electric device over their pacemaker.”

…”telemetry interference” occurred in 29 percent of the patients, and “over sensing” (a pacemaker misreading the heart’s function) occurred in 20 percent of patients. In one patient, the pacemaker stopped working. In some cases, interference was detected even when the iPods were held as far as 18 inches from the chest…..”people with pacemakers need to be aware of the risk..”

“People commonly strap their iPod to the arm right next to their pacemaker or put it in a shirt pocket. There are quite a few situations where they come in proximity to the pacemaker”…”

“… a cardiac electrophysiologist… agrees that iPods can be a danger to patients with pacemakers….iPods can affect pacing function,” …”There is a possibility for a severe reaction, such as loss of consciousness.”

… “Patients with a pacemaker could safely use an iPod, just don’t put it over the device,”….iPods could also pose a problem for patients with implanted pacemaker defibrillators, …”The possibility would be there for inappropriate shock,”… “shocks are quite painful and traumatic for patients.”

Definitions

The properties and effects of non-ionising radiations are very diverse. For the purpose of this Policy non-ionising radiations include:

Extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 0 Hz (static fields) to 3 kHz, including the 50 Hz electric and magnetic fields associated with the domestic mains electricity supply such as in domestic electrical appliances, electricity supply substations and overhead power lines.

Radiofrequency (RF) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 3 kHz to 300 GHz, which is produced by artificial sources such as visual display units and mobile phones.

Microwave (MW) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 1 GHz to 300 GHz, which is produced by artificial sources such as in microwave ovens and by microwave communication devices. (This radiation is now considered part of Radiofrequency radiation.)

Infrared (IR) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 700 nm and 1 mm, which is present in sunlight and produced by artificial sources such as electric radiator heaters.

Visible light

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 400 nm (blue) and 700 nm (red), which is present in sunlight and produced by numerous artificial sources, including lasers.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 100 nm and 400 nm, which is present in sunlight as well as produced by artificial sources such as arc welding and sterilization lamps.

Court victory is a first for cell-phone programmers

“……[she] thought it was just another in a series of sinus infections. Her head and eyes hurt, and she was vomiting. But then Price had a seizure, and a brain scan found something far more troubling….the phone was ringing. It was the doctor’s office, … `Brace yourself. Honey, you have a brain tumor.’ “

“After her diagnosis in 1999 and surgery to remove most of the tumor, [she] started looking for answers…. convinced that exposure to radio-frequency radiation on the job, where she programmed cell phones for new customers, had caused the tumor.”…an administrative law judge who handles worker’s compensation claims awarded her $30,000 to pay her medical bills and other expenses. [She] may be the first person to convince a judge that her illness was caused by radio-frequency radiation….when she filed a workers comp claim, her boss fired her, eliminating her health insurance. Then she lost the case. The Native American single mother of two daughters was devastated. She turned to Tribal Health, a government health agency for Native Americans, to get anti-seizure medication.””…If I hadn’t been Indian, I would have died,” she said.”

“After Price recovered from brain surgery, she went to the Internet and found researchers studying the biological effects of radio-frequency radiation, and got to know them.”

“I would call them up and say, `You are absolutely dead on. If a rat could talk, this is what it would say. I’m the human rat.’ “

“[She] couldn’t find an attorney to take her case until she contacted … a semi-retired lawyer and president of the Wireless Consumers Alliance, a California-based consumer-advocacy group…[who] volunteered to represent her pro bono and re-filed her workers comp case….

“It’s not a money issue, suing the company, it’s a health and safety issue,” … [she] speaks to school assemblies and classes…

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) came out with an interesting report earlier in the year which addressed the increasing usage of cell phones in cars. The report states that driver cell phone usage increased in 2005, with 6% of drivers on hand-held phones in 2005 nationwide, compared to 5% in 2004.

The 2005 rate translates into 974,000 vehicles on the road at any given daylight moment being driven by someone on a hand-held phone. It also translates into an estimated 10% of vehicles in the typical daylight moment whose driver is using some type of phone, whether hand-held or hands-free.

The 2005 survey also reported:

• Hand-held cell phone use increased in a number of driver categories, including female drivers (from 6% in 2004 to 8% in 2005), and drivers age 16-24 (8% 2004 to 10% in 2005).

• The incidence of drivers speaking with headsets on while driving also increased in 2005, from 0.4% of drivers in 2004 to 0.7% in 2005.

http://blog.insweb.com/2006/09/driver_cell_phone_usage_on_the.html

A significant point to consider is that one of the most dangerous places to use a cell phone (aside from traffic accidents and road rage) is in the car, because of the surrounding metal–the electromagnetic waves just bounce around and through you, unless there is a special external antenna installe so there is some means of release.
