Phone makers’ own scientists discover that bedtime use can lead to headaches, confusion and depression

“Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study…. “The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

“The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom – surveys suggest – use their phones late at night and who especially need sleep. Their failure to get enough can lead to mood and personality changes, ADHD-like symptoms, depression, lack of concentration and poor academic performance.”

“The study – carried out by scientists from the blue-chip Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden and from Wayne State University in Michigan, USA – is thought to be the most comprehensive of its kind….” Published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium and funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, representing the main handset companies, it has caused serious concern among top sleep experts, one of whom said that there was now “more than sufficient evidence” to show that the radiation “affects deep sleep.”

“The scientists studied 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45. Some were exposed to radiation that exactly mimicked what is received when using mobile phones; others were placed in precisely the same conditions, but given only “sham” exposure, receiving no radiation at all….The people who had received the radiation took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep, and spent less time in the deepest one. The scientists concluded: “The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected.”

“The embarrassed [manufacturers] played down the results, insisting – at apparent variance with this published conclusion – that its “results were inconclusive” and that “the researchers did not claim that exposure caused sleep disturbance”….”We did find an effect from mobile phones from exposure scenarios that were realistic. This suggests that they have measurable effects on the brain.”…”the radiation may activate the brain’s stress system, “making people more alert and more focused, and decreasing their ability to wind down and fall asleep”.

“About half of the people studied believed themselves to be “electrosensitive”, reporting symptoms such as headaches and impaired cognitive function from mobile phone use. But they proved to be unable to tell if they had been exposed to the radiation in the test.”…” This strengthens the conclusion of the study, as it disposes of any suggestion that knowledge of exposure influenced sleeping patterns. Even more significantly, it throws into doubt the relevance of studies the industry relies on to maintain that the radiation has no measurable effects.”…”A series of them … have similarly found that people claiming to be electrosensitive could not distinguish when the radiation was turned on in laboratory conditions, suggesting that they were not affected.”…”Critics have attacked the studies’ methodology, but the new findings deal them a serious blow. For they show that the radiation did have an effect, even though people could not tell when they were exposed.”

“It also complements other recent research. A massive study, following 1,656” … “teenagers for a year, found most of them used their phones after going to bed. It concluded that those who did this once a week were more than three times – and those who used them more often more than five times – as likely to be “very tired”….the director of [a] Sleep Centre, says: “There is now more than sufficient evidence, from a large number of reputable investigators who are finding that mobile phone exposure an hour before sleep adversely affects deep sleep.”  [Another director of a] Sleep Institute added: “Anything that disrupts the integrity of your sleep will potentially have adverse consequences in functioning during the day, such as grouchiness, difficulty concentrating, and in children hyperactivity and behaviour problems.”

“Microwave Sickness or Neurasthenia” August 31, 2006

“From 1953 to 1976, the Soviets directed microwave radiation at the U.S. embassy in Moscow from the roof of an adjacent building. The possibility that this microwave exposure could induce health problems in the embassy staff prompted the government to begin classified research programs on the health effects of microwave exposure. One of these programs, called “Project Pandora,” was organized and administered by the psychology division of the psychiatry research section of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). Public attention was not drawn to these events in Moscow and the question of possible health effects from NIEM exposure until the 1976 release of information by the U.S. State Department accusing the Soviet Union of bombarding the U.S. embassy in Moscow with microwave radiation for the purpose of disturbing the health of the staff. The State Department indicated that, in addition to the mass interference and interception of radar-based communications, the microwave radiation could have adverse effects on the health of the occupants of the embassy. In fact, Soviet data provided the strongest basis for this accusation. The Soviet NIEM research literature reported adverse health effects in laboratory animals and in Soviet radar workers at levels well below the 10 mW/|cm.sup.2~ U.S. ANSI safety recommendations.”

“In 1976, when the Moscow embassy incident was made public, the Soviet NIEM standard was more than 100 times lower than the U.S. recommendations. Many comparisons and concerns regarding the discrepancy between the exposure guidelines of the two nations appeared in the U.S. media. It is interesting to note that the media coverage rarely mentioned the fact that the ANSI recommendations were intended for all U.S. industry staff and military personnel. The Soviet standards, on the other hand, excluded exposure of military personnel (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements |NCRP~, 1986).”

“The attention to the Soviet studies claiming adverse health effects brought the discipline of psychology to the forefront of NIEM research because many of the Soviet laboratory observations purporting potential health-related effects on small animals were from behavioral studies. Also, almost all of the symptoms reported in Soviet communications and radar workers were psychological in nature. These symptoms included lethargy, lack of concentration, headaches, depression, and impotence. Soviet medical journals termed these collective symptoms microwave sickness. In the U.S. literature the symptoms sometimes have been referred to as neurasthenia (Dodge & Glaser, 1977; Glaser & Dodge, 1977).”

It is time for the funding agencies to realizethat we need to be asking new and different questions

about electropollution, EMF’s, and radiation.

There has been considerable research already done showing

relationships between many dis-ease processes and

electromagnetic frequencies. However, there has been a

limitation in the thinking so far, which raises new questions.

What if the cause and effect are not a direct link?

If the cell membrane is being affected by EMF’s, what effect

does that have on the body?

Would it always be the same effect on different kinds

of people?

If the signalizing enzymes are being affected by EMF’s,

would that always show up as the same kind of disease?

Why are some people more susceptible to symptoms from

EMF’s than others? Is there a genetic difference? A

cumulative difference? A geographic differernce?

A psychological difference? A consciousness difference?

A usuage difference?

How can one possibly set up a truly valid scientific study

when there are so many variables?

How long will it be before more people show signs

of cellular damage? How can it be measured?

What tests are there?

Since kids are on the phone much more than adults,

in some cases, are they likely to show symptoms sooner

because of the cumulative effect, or later because of

stronger immune systems?

These are questions that require the input of many

different kinds of professional to set up a good study.

It’s not so simple as saying A cause B.

How many people have to suffer before this issue is resolved?

It’s time to think outside the box!
