“Internationally acknowledged experts in the field of RF research have shown that RF of the type used in digital cellular antennas and phones can have critical effects on cell cultures, animals, and people in laboratories and have also found epidemiological evidence (studies of communities, not in the laboratory) of serious health effects at “non-thermal levels,” where the intensity of the radiation was too low to cause heating. They have found:

  • Increased cell growth of brain cancer cells(4)
  • A doubling of the rate of lymphoma in mice(5)
  • Changes in tumor growth in rats(6)
  • An increased number of tumors in rats(7)
  • Increased breaks in double and single stranded DNA, our genetic material(8)
  • 2 to 4 times as many cancers in Polish soldiers exposed to RF(9)
  • More childhood leukemia in children exposed to RF(10)
  • Changes in sleep patterns and REM type sleep(11)
  • Headaches caused by RF exposure(12)
  • Neurologic changes(13) including
    • Changes in the blood-brain-barrier(14)
    • Changes in cellular morphology (including cell death)(15)
    • Changes in neural electrophysiology (EEG)(16)
    • Changes in neurotransmitters (which affect motivation and pain perception)(17)
    • Metabolic changes (of calcium ions, for instance)(18)
    • Cytogenetic effects (which can affect cancer, Alzheimer’s, neurodegenerative diseases)(19)
  • Decreased memory, attention, and slower reaction time in school children(20)
  • Retarded learning in rats indicating a deficit in spatial “working memory”(21)
  • Increased blood pressure in healthy men(22)
  • Damage to eye cells when combined with commonly used glaucoma medications(23)”

A Physician Petition: the Freiburger Appeal

“Hundreds of physicians have been signing a petition that raises health concerns over mobile phone technology: base stations, mobile phones and digital cordless phones. The appeal states:

We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:

  • Learning, concentration, and behavioural disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder, ADD)
  • Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
  • Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer–s) and epilepsy
  • Cancerous afflictions: leukaemia, brain tumours”

“Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

  • Headaches, migraines
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Inner agitation
  • Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
  • Tinnitus
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms”

“The Freiburger Appeal states: “We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence, far too often do we observe a marked concentration of particular illnesses in correspondingly HFMR-polluted areas or apartments. Too often does a long-term disease or affliction improve or disappear in a relatively short time after reduction or elimination of HFMR pollution in the patient’s environment. Too often are our observations confirmed by on-site measurements of HFMR of unusual intensity. On the basis of our daily experiences, we hold the current mobile communications technology (introduced in 1992 and since then globally extensive) and cordless digital telephones (DECT standard) to be among the fundamental triggers for this fatal development. One can no longer evade these pulsed microwaves. They heighten the risk of already-present chemical/physical influences, stress the body–s immune system, and can bring the body–s still-functioning regulatory mechanisms to a halt. Pregnant women, children, adolescents, elderly and sick people are especially at risk.”

Maggie Hannegan is a Director if Corporate Relations with the American
Cancer Society.

On Friday Aug. 25th, 2006, she emailed Dr. David O. Carpenter, at the
Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany in New York.
I have permission to pass this very important communication to you.

Dear Dr. Carpenter:

I have been fielding questions from a number of individuals concerned
about cancer and electromagnetic sensitivity and your name came up as a
resource.
Obviously, I am not a doctor or health specialist, but due to the fact I
work at ACS I get many questions about cancer and causes of cancer. The
following quote was attributed to you…is this in fact your finding?
Thank you.

“The International Agency for Research on Cancer – part of the WHO and
the leading international organisation on the disease – classes the
electromagnetic smog as a “possible human carcinogen”. And Professor
David Carpenter, dean of the School of Public Health at the State
University of New York, told The Independent on Sunday last week that it
was likely to cause up to 30 per cent of all childhood cancers. A report
by the California Health Department concludes that it is also likely to
cause adult leukaemia, brain cancers and possibly breast cancer and
could be responsible for a 10th of all miscarriages”

Dr. Carpenter responded:
The quote is essentially correct. In the Winter, 1988, issue
of Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy, I and Dr. Anders Ahlbom
published a short report entitled “Power lines and cancer: Public health
and policy implications.” In that report we calculated on the basis of
the study by Savitz et al. (1988) that if his results applied to the
the rest of the country (his study was only in Denver) that 10-15% of
childhood cancer was caused by power line fields. We also noted that
there are many other sources of exposure to magnetic fields, such as
appliances and exposures in schools etc., and that these exposures
should contribute about equally to those from the power lines. This has
been translated by some to say that up to 30% of all childhood cancer is
due to magnetic fields.
If you use these calculations I would appreciate having them put into the context in which they were proposed. Thanks for your interest.

“The most basic fact about cell phones and cell towers is that they emit microwave radiation; so do Wi-Fi (wireless Internet) antennas, wireless computers, cordless (portable) phones and their base units, and all other wireless devices. If it’s a communication device and it’s not attached to the wall by a wire, it’s emitting radiation. Most Wi-Fi systems and some cordless phones operate at the exact same frequency as a microwave oven, while other devices use a different frequency. Wi-Fi is always on and always radiating. The base units of most cordless phones are always radiating, even when no one is using the phone. A cell phone that is on but not in use is also radiating. And, needless to say, cell towers are always radiating.”The Largest Biological Experiment Ever ARTHUR FIRSTENBERG / Sun Monthly 1jan2006

“Why is this a problem, you might ask? Scientists usually divide the electromagnetic spectrum into “ionizing” and “non-ionizing.” Ionizing radiation, which includes x-rays and atomic radiation, causes cancer. Non-ionizing radiation, which includes microwave radiation, is supposed to be safe. This distinction always reminded me of the propaganda in George Orwell’s Animal Farm: “Four legs good, two legs bad.” “Non-ionizing good, ionizing bad” is as little to be trusted.”

“An astronomer once quipped that if Neil Armstrong had taken a cell phone to the Moon in 1969, it would have appeared to be the third most powerful source of microwave radiation in the universe, next only to the Sun and the Milky Way. He was right. Life evolved with negligible levels of microwave radiation. An increasing number of scientists speculate that our own cells, in fact, use the microwave spectrum to communicate with one another, like children whispering in the dark, and that cell phones, like jackhammers, interfere with their signaling. In any case, it is a fact that we are all being bombarded, day in and day out, whether we use a cell phone or not, by an amount of microwave radiation that is some ten million times as strong as the average natural background. And it is also a fact that most of this radiation is due to technology that has been developed since the 1970s.”

It is time for the funding agencies to realizethat we need to be asking new and different questions

about electropollution, EMF’s, and radiation.

There has been considerable research already done showing

relationships between many dis-ease processes and

electromagnetic frequencies. However, there has been a

limitation in the thinking so far, which raises new questions.

What if the cause and effect are not a direct link?

If the cell membrane is being affected by EMF’s, what effect

does that have on the body?

Would it always be the same effect on different kinds

of people?

If the signalizing enzymes are being affected by EMF’s,

would that always show up as the same kind of disease?

Why are some people more susceptible to symptoms from

EMF’s than others? Is there a genetic difference? A

cumulative difference? A geographic differernce?

A psychological difference? A consciousness difference?

A usuage difference?

How can one possibly set up a truly valid scientific study

when there are so many variables?

How long will it be before more people show signs

of cellular damage? How can it be measured?

What tests are there?

Since kids are on the phone much more than adults,

in some cases, are they likely to show symptoms sooner

because of the cumulative effect, or later because of

stronger immune systems?

These are questions that require the input of many

different kinds of professional to set up a good study.

It’s not so simple as saying A cause B.

How many people have to suffer before this issue is resolved?

It’s time to think outside the box!

1. Reviewers for a comprehensive EMF risk assessment by the California Dept. of Health Services have determined that it is highly likely that EMF causes some forms of cancer, along with chronic neurological conditions like ALS, Alzheimer’s, Depression, etc.

2.Medical and epidemiological studies have found strong evidence that EMF exposure causes some forms of cancer, along with neurological conditions like ALS, Alzheimer’s Disease, Depression, etc.

3. One mechanism by which EMF causes these immune and neurological conditions is the fact that EMF has been found to cause significant increases in release of mercury into the body of those with amalgam dental fillings; and mercury has been documented to cause all of these immune and neurolgical conditions.

4.Amalgam dental fillings have been documented to be the largest source of mercury in most people who have amalgam fillings, with common mercury exposures more than Government health guidelines.

5. Most people get significant exposures to Electromagnetic Fields(EMF) from computer monitors, televisions, microwaves, other appliances, and power lines. These exposures have been found to significantly increase release and excretion of mercury in those with amalgam fillings.”

There are two primary barriers that have inhibited the development of a strong research program in EMS. They are a paucity of well-trained researchers with an interest in EMS research and a lack of reliable funding sources to support research. There are also three identifiable secondary barriers to EMS research. They are: a lack of recognizing the need for evidence-based practice; standardizing, accessing and sharing data; and complying with the current established ethical requirements for human research.

To some extent, there is a chicken and egg phenomenon at work within the two primary barriers to developing a comprehensive EMS research program. For example, funding agencies understandably prefer to place their funds with researchers who have a track record of proven productivity. However, since there are not many proven researchers with interests in EMS problems, few funds flow into EMS-related research. On the other hand, academic institutions are reluctant to support the professional development of new, EMS-focused researchers because they cannot identify likely funding sources with a history of supporting EMS research.

Research follows a particular methodology. But what if we changed the way we view it? Often medical research has looked for the cause of a particular disease, such as cancer. What if the cause and effect are not directly related?

People may show various illnesses because of their particular vulnerabilities. So the same cause might show up differently in different people. For instance, since radiation seems to affect the cell membrane, and the signaling in the body, the same cause (radiation) may look different in kids, for instance, than in adults.

Kids are more vulnerable because their skulls are thinner. Yet, they may have more immunity than their parents. And they are certainly getting more exposure to radiation that their elders did as kids.

So, setting up a good research program is complicated. It requires asking the right questions. And it requires being convincing enough to get the funding before the answers are there.

Personally, I don’t want to wait for the research. I think it is important to build the immune response against radiation now.
