The National Electric and Magnetic Fields Advisory Committee

This letter was posted to the emf-l mail reflector…by Roy Beavers (EMF Guru),

and addresses the future of EMF Bioeffects Research …

“We regard this message as one of considerable importance

to the future of the EMF research effort and we want everyone

on the EMF-L net to be aware of what follows in order that you

may lend your support to the continuation of EMF research

funding….

"neither the press release nor the Executive Summary
of the report adequately reflects the conclusions to
be found in the body of the report. Furthermore,
the report's release
received widespread national press coverage,
much of which was misleading
and could adversely impact funding decisions for the
EMF RAPID Program as well as other EMF research programs.
Continued research with adequate funding is essential
to resolve the uncertainties about EMF
health effects.

The NEMFAC wants to call to your attention the
following important points:

* Contrary to reports in the popular press
the NAS/NRC report does not state that extremely
low magnetic fields are safe. Rather, the report
concludes that there is an unexplained, but
statistically reliable and robust association
between power transmission and distribution
systems and childhood cancer and that continued
research is necessary.

The NAS/NRC report was commissioned before
the results from the EMF RAPID program will be
available. In addition, the report is limited to
residential findings and reflects literature reviews
only through 1994 plus 12 papers from 1995. It
excluded the large body of work concerning
occupational studies published throughout
the same period.

The Energy Policy Act of 1992 requires a
final report to Congress from the EMF RAPID
program on whether the research indicates
a health hazard.

Plans are now in development for proceeding with
this mandatory assessment. We recommend that the
EMF RAPID program's report to Congress include the
following elements to improve upon the work done thus
by the NAS/NRC or other reviewing bodies:

The results of childhood cancer epidemiology studies...
quantitative evaluation of exposures, and better controls
than previous studies, results of occupational epidemiology
and exposure, assessment studies, several animal studies...,
the results of cell studies that have been duplicated
in multiple laboratories, findings from the
EMF RAPID program,...results of several major
breast cancer studies....

"The U.S. Congress, the U.S. utility industry, and
many foreign governments have, over the last few years,
invested funds in research of health effects of
extremely low frequency EMFs. Those steps have
been taken in response to public concern as well
as to the provocative results of early EMF research.
Although this research is focused and well coordinated,
the issues are complex and numerous questions
have not yet been answered…."

"Few of the elevated risks seen in those studies
(childhood leukemia and EMF) are above 3 and many
lie in the 1.5-2 range. Relative risks in this range
are considerably lower than those

seen in studies of known human carcinogens
such as cigarettes. It should be noted, however,
that there are other well accepted associations,
such as the association between smoking and heart

disease, that fall in this range, Furthermore, a
relative risk of 2 (a doubling of the risk of
childhood cancer) coupled with the widespread

exposure to EMFs, could have a potentially
significant impact on the population...."

"I share this view that any potential
EMF health risks could have significant
public health implications.
Therefore, EMF research is an
important public policy
concern, and I will be happy to
address any questions
that you may have about this
matter or discuss the
EMF RAPID program with you."

Sincerely yours,

(Signature, Shirley D. Linde)

We need a new kind of team to set up the next study on EMF’s, because the issues cross so many disciplines. Professionals don’t have time to read all the journals from all the other professions. We need to talk.
How about a team like this?

A cardiologist, a brain surgeon, an electrician, a computer programmer, an eye doctor, an executive from the cell phone industry, a quantum physicist, a metallurgist, a wifi expert, a government official, several lawyers specialising in a variety of things, a scientific representative from NIH, a member of WHO, an international specialist in electrical engineering, a German dowser, another computer programmer specializing in networks, a yogi, a farmer in the boondocks away from all cell phones towers, along with several of his animals, and their vet, an agriculturialist who is near the towers, an environmentalist, a few athletes of different sports, an organic farmer, a few healthy volunteers, a geologist specializing in water, some sick people with a variety of diseases, some housewives with kids and some women who work, some teenagers with cell phones, some children with leukemia, someone who sets the SAR standards, some critics, some journalists, CNN, a medical research university president, maybe an astronaut or two, etc.

Anyone want to plan a conference?

Who might ask the best questions of this crew? And be able to synthesize the results?

It is time for the funding agencies to realizethat we need to be asking new and different questions

about electropollution, EMF’s, and radiation.

There has been considerable research already done showing

relationships between many dis-ease processes and

electromagnetic frequencies. However, there has been a

limitation in the thinking so far, which raises new questions.

What if the cause and effect are not a direct link?

If the cell membrane is being affected by EMF’s, what effect

does that have on the body?

Would it always be the same effect on different kinds

of people?

If the signalizing enzymes are being affected by EMF’s,

would that always show up as the same kind of disease?

Why are some people more susceptible to symptoms from

EMF’s than others? Is there a genetic difference? A

cumulative difference? A geographic differernce?

A psychological difference? A consciousness difference?

A usuage difference?

How can one possibly set up a truly valid scientific study

when there are so many variables?

How long will it be before more people show signs

of cellular damage? How can it be measured?

What tests are there?

Since kids are on the phone much more than adults,

in some cases, are they likely to show symptoms sooner

because of the cumulative effect, or later because of

stronger immune systems?

These are questions that require the input of many

different kinds of professional to set up a good study.

It’s not so simple as saying A cause B.

How many people have to suffer before this issue is resolved?

It’s time to think outside the box!

“A recent study out of Finland suggests that a person’s genetic makeup can determine how much he or she will be affected by radiation from cellular phones.”

”This is certainly not a new topic. Warnings of damage from cell waves have been issued for many years now, starting with a wave of suspected links to brain cancer several years back. Previous attempts to prove such links have failed. And those failures, at least according to the Finnish scientists, occurred because the tests didn’t take genomic differences into account.”

“Tests at a research facility in Helsinki showed definite differences in the way that two genetically different sets of cells responded to 900 MHz GSM cell-phone radiation: One set of cells showed no remarkable difference, while the other showed damage to its DNA.”

Many employees use computers, cell phones, copiers, printers, scanners and other electronic equipment to do their jobs. Cubicles in large rooms often have several pieces of electronic equipment in them, so employees sitting in those large rooms are exposed to electromagnetic radiation from a lot of equipment in the environment. Men and and some women are carrying cell phones in their pocket. Some employees work near high transmission lines. All of these things may be contributing to invisible and cumulative health problems.

Employers would be well advised to put universal chips infused with energy resonance technology on their computer equipment and cell phones. Many employees work near many computers and other devices like printers and copiers that are all producing electromagnetic frequencies. The employees are therefore being exposed in multiple ways.

Some employees show greater sensitivity to the electromagnetic radiation. Research would indicate that this may be an increasing problem for employers. If employees show increasing suffering from extreme stress, fatigue, attention issues, and depression, employers should take note and take precautions before they have really serious health issues to deal with and increasing health care costs.

Unfortunately, employees who experience the symptoms may not consciously connect their symptoms with their workplace, or the equipment at work. Upper management, HRD management, and safety engineers need to be educating themselves on this subject.

Government should also take note and provide protection through universal chips. While government agencies involved in research on EMF’s are still making up their minds about how to position their views on this subject, they could be advising other government officials to be taking precautions to prevent health issues among government workers in the meantime. The universal chips are balancing in themselves, so they might be helpful even if the government does not choose to change its standards.

Upper management of companies and government needs to be making budget decisions to put protective chips on all their equipment. It will save them money in the long run on health care costs, absenteeism, and reduction in productivity.

One of the challenges in truly understanding the effects of electromagnetic frequencies is that is crosses so many professions. Researchers in one field are not always aware of the research being done in different field. To get a clear picture of the issues, interdisiplinary research is badly needed.

When referring to electromagnetic frequencies, we open up a large topic which includes jargon from many fields of interest. Some EMF’s are produced naturally from the earth. These are not harmful, and in fact, can be beneficial. Other EMF’s are produced through various man-made or man-engineered processes, such as video display terminals, computer monitors and the like. Some of emitted frequencies can be harmful, especially in certain amounts. There is much discussion about where the boundaries are as to what is helpful, harmful or destructive.

Researchers are looking at this from different perspectives. Studies are done with various voltages. You might read about EMF’s being described in any of these ways:

“This challenge was first thrown down in 1999. We have had not one single person daring to take it up and thereby win a thousand pounds. In June 2003 I doubled the stakes! First take a look at our studies on sudden infant death syndrome, ME, and on childhood leukaemia …..

NRPB investigation levels advise 12000 Volts per metre at ELF frequencies at the level where investigation becomes necessary to see if the field is strong enough to inflict adverse health effects from burning. Below this level no special precautions are necessary, they say. Power utilities around the world hide behind this advice (in some countries the level is only 5000 Volts per metre, (in Russia it is 500 Volts per metre…and the utilities broadly deny that non-thermal effects from Electric field exposures below 5000 Volts per metre could be hazardous.

…studies …have shown that people sleeping in bedplaces where the ELF electric field is elevated above normal levels (say above 20 Volts per metre) there is serious ill health from chronic exposure (asthenias and leukaemias in adults, cot death in children)…”

“The £2000 ($3000) Coghill Challenge is:

Place any human infant of less than three months age to sleep each night for at least eight hours in an ELF electric field of 100 Volts per metre for thirty days. My studies predict that child will die, or become so seriously ill that the test will have to be called off….

I will personally bet any NRPB member of staff or any any electric power utility worker around the world £2000 (or US$3000) willing to do this experiment, that my prediction will prove correct.

Only one £2000 payment will be made …..

Only power worker employee and NRPB staff employee parents are eligible for the Coghill Challenge.

This challenge was originally mounted on 4 July 1999, and was extended as from 4 July 2003.”
