Cell Phones Do Cause Brain Tumors
Magda Havas, PhD, Cell Phones Do Cause Brain Tumors
Trent University, September 15, 2011

“About nine out of 10 US households now have at least one cell phone — and that doesn’t include other wireless devices, such as cordless phones, iPads, baby monitors and computers.”

“Result: The average adult (and child) is flooded with nonionizing radiation, a form of energy that — for the first time — has been officially linked to cancer. In May, a panel of the World Health Organization (WHO) listed cell phones as a class 2b carcinogen, which means that it’s “possible” that cell phones, like some industrial chemicals, increase the risk for cancer.”

“This conclusion has been disputed by many scientists. But careful analysis of the best studies to date indicate that people who log the most cell-phone minutes are more likely to develop tumors on the same side of the head that they hold the cell phone, compared with those who use cell phones less often.”

Disturbing Research

“The largest study of cell-phone use, known as INTERPHONE, was conducted in 13 countries over a 10-year period. The study, published in International Journal of Epidemiology, found that people who used cell phones for at least 1,640 hours over the 10-year period — that comes to about 30 minutes a day — had a 40% higher risk of developing a glioma, a deadly type of brain tumor.”

“Disturbing: The development of a brain tumor to the point that it can be detected often takes 20 to 30 years. The fact that these tumors are showing up after 10 years of exposure is disturbing because it is much faster than expected.”

“Previous studies have linked frequent or prolonged cell-phone use to an increase in parotid (salivary gland) and auditory nerve tumors.”

“The actual risk probably is higher than the studies indicate. The INTERPHONE study defined “heavy use” as using a cell phone for about 30 minutes a day. That’s a fraction of the time that many people currently spend on their cell phones.”

“Also, the study looked only at adults, even though young people are frequent users of cell phones and the ones who face the highest cancer risks from decades of radiation exposure.”

“In addition, the study “diluted” the data by identifying people as regular cell-phone users who may have used their phones only once a week for at least six months. These light users were obviously exposed to far less radiation than heavy users. Including them in the study caused the cancer percentages to appear artificially low. For example, we would not expect someone who smoked one cigarette a week for at least six months to develop lung cancer.”

Safer Use

“Skeptics of cell-phone dangers argue that nonionizing radiation is too weak to heat tissues or break chemical bonds, factors that are known to increase cancer risks. But recent studies indicate damage to DNA in rat brains exposed to cell-phone radiation, and this type of damage can lead to cancer.”

Ways to stay safe…

“The fine print in cell-phone manuals usually advises users to hold the phone at least 7/8 of an inch away from the ear. Farther is better. Use speakerphone mode.”

“Wait for good reception. Cell phones emit much higher levels of radiation when the antenna is sending out signals to search for a tower or satellite. These signals can travel hundreds of miles — and the poorer the reception, the greater the radiation emitted by your cell phone.”

Use a hollow-tube headset. This is the safest type of headset because the last few inches, those closest to the ear, consist of a hollow tube. This hollow tube transmits sound like a stethoscope. Wired headsets need to be kept away from the body because the continuous wire that runs from the phone to the earpiece will expose you to some unnecessary radiation. Hollow-tube headsets can be purchased at http://www.Mercola.com or http://www.WaveShield.com/products.”

Use “airplane mode.” Even when you’re not talking on a cell phone, the phone is sending out signals every few minutes to search for the nearest tower. Turn off the phone when you’re not using it. Or switch it to airplane mode so that it can’t send or receive signals, but you still can use the phone to listen to music, watch videos and check your calendar.”

“Keep the phone on your desk when working. When the phone is switched on, don’t keep it in your pocket or attached to your belt. This is particularly important for men. Preliminary research indicates that men who keep their phones close to their bodies (often in holsters or pockets) have lower sperm counts and poorer sperm quality than those without this exposure. We do not know the effects on egg cells because they are more difficult to harvest.”

“Caution: The worst way to use a Bluetooth wireless headset is to place it on your ear with the cell phone in your pocket. This way, your head and lower body are both being irradiated. A better way to use a Bluetooth is to keep the cell phone on a table several feet away from all body parts and to periodically move the earpiece from one ear to the other to minimize one-side radiation exposure.”

Text instead of talk. There’s a burst of radiation when you send or receive a text message, but the intensity and duration of the radiation are lower than when you talk. Texting is a better alternative to talking on your cell phone, but keep the phone as far away from your body as possible. Normal clothing, including leather, will not reduce your exposure.”

Don’t use your phone in a car, train or bus. Using a cell phone inside a metal vehicle can increase levels of radiation due to reflection and the fact that your cell-phone signal has to be higher to exit the vehicle. The best practice is to keep the phone off or in airplane mode and to check it periodically for messages. Then return messages by text or use a landline phone later.”

“Mobile telephones, television and radio transmitters and radar produce RF fields. These fields are used to transmit information over long distances and form the basis of telecommunications as well as radio and television broadcasting all over the world. Microwaves are RF fields at high frequencies in the GHz range. In microwaves ovens, we use them to quickly heat food.””At radio frequencies, electric and magnetic fields are closely interrelated and we typically measure their levels as power densities in watts per square metre (W/m2).”

“Key points:

  • The electromagnetic spectrum encompasses both natural and human-made sources of electromagnetic fields.
  • Frequency and wavelength characterise an electromagnetic field. In an electromagnetic wave, these two characteristics are directly related to each other: the higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength.
  • Ionizing radiation such as X-ray and gamma-rays consists of photons which carry sufficient energy to break molecular bonds. Photons of electromagnetic waves at power and radio frequencies have much lower energy that do not have this ability.
  • Electric fields exist whenever charge is present and are measured in volts per metre (V/m). Magnetic fields arise from current flow. Their flux densities are measured in microtesla (µT) or millitesla (mT).
  • At radio and microwave frequencies, electric and magnetic fields are considered together as the two components of an electromagnetic wave. Power density, measured in watts per square metre (W/m2), describes the intensity of these fields.
  • Low frequency and high frequency electromagnetic waves affect the human body in different ways.
  • Electrical power supplies and appliances are the most common sources of low frequency electric and magnetic fields in our living environment. Everyday sources of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields are telecommunications, broadcasting antennas and microwave ovens.”

Though intended for renovations, Chris Anderson would like all visitors to deposit their cellular phones in the cement mixer by his front door. This sounds excessive – until you step into Anderson’s orchard, where the pegged needle of a shrieking electromagnetic radiation (EMR) meter placed beside a connected cellphone still shows significant exposure 100 feet away.

Much to the chagrin of this certified EMR-mitigation specialist, every day some 300 million cell phone users are “reaching out and touching someone you love. Yourself, and anyone else within range of the microwaves emitted by your cell phone.”……Silicon sensors are already calling to each other. Soon, countless communicating microchips embedded in everything from bumpers to brooms will be sending streams of encoded electrical energy through glass, steel, concrete, bone and flesh. Exquisitely sensitive to subtle electromagnetic harmonies, human brains and bodies as intricate as galaxies depend on tiny electrical impulses to conduct complex life-processes – including the ability to read, recall and respond to these words. Acting as antennas, our anatomies just as easily tune into spurious signals from radio and microwave transmissions. .

….”a worse frequency could not have been chosen for the human anatomy.”

As cell phones conquer consumer minds and markets, researcher Carolanne Patton notes that “the brain reaches peak absorption in the UHF bands, right where cellular telecommunications operate.” British military scientists have discovered that cellphone transmissions disrupt the brain sites for memory and learning, causing forgetfulness and sudden confusion.

Other studies show that electromagnetic signals from cellular phones reduce the ability to concentrate, calculate and coordinate complicated activities such as driving a car. Startled by $4 billion a year in extra claims among cellphone-wielding drivers, North American insurers did a double-take that found simply juggling `cell phones is not causing a 600% increase in accidents over other drivers busy shaving, applying makeup, tuning radios, taming pets, making out, pouring coffee, retrieving dropped cigarettes, talking and gesturing to passengers, or actually steering the vehicle….Instead of just another dangerous distraction, tests conducted by the U.S.Department of Energy found that using a cell phone severely impairs memory and reaction times. “Hands-free” mobile speaker-phones cause even more crashes because they typically emit 10-times more brainwave interference than handheld units.

For all drivers dialing out on their cell phones, University of Toronto investigators report that the heightened probability of cracking up your car persists for up to 15-minutes after completing a call. That’s comparable to the risk of crashing while driving dead drunk exclaims Dr. Chris Runball, chairman of the B.C. Medical Association’s emergency medical services committee. Reeling from “dial-a-collision” costs, the government of British Columbia may join England, Spain, Israel, Switzerland and Brazil in restricting or banning the use of cell phones by drivers.

In New Zealand, cellphone towers are prohibited on school property because of possible health effects.
But Health Canada regulations ignore the hidden hazards of cell-wrenching cellphones, which send pulsed signals through the skull in a process one expert likens to “jackhammers on the brain.”

…. cellphone addiction mirrors the prestigious early allure of smoking – as well as an immensely profitable industry’s steadfast denial of risk and responsibility. …Sir William Stewart told London’s Financial Times that “children may be more vulnerable because of their developing nervous system, the greater absorption of energy in the tissues of the head and a longer lifetime of exposure.”

…a Ph.D. biophysicist warns that headaches, fatigue, lethargy, nausea, dizziness, depression, arteriosclerosis and even Alzheimer’s can result from frequent or prolonged calls on cell phones.

“There is also a higher incidence of cardiac problems,” Cherry comments, “in terms of the timing function in hearts. You get more heart attacks and more heart disease – it has now been shown in many studies.”

…..cell phones can murderously modify moods. In brains and bodies seriously derailed by tiny imbalances in trace minerals and hormones, depression, suicide, anger, rage and violence can result when calcium and serotonin levels are disrupted by cellphone transmissions….
.
….DNA damage is passed on to succeeding generations.

….we forget how inconvenient it is to contract cancer. …B-cell lymphomas doubled in mice within 18 months of one-hour daily exposure to power densities experienced by a cellphone user. B-cell lymphomas are implicated in 85% of all cancers.

…Sleep disorders, she learned, are common among people exposed to high levels of electromagnetic pollution.

…there is nothing “safe” about the new 1.9 gigahertz broadcasting frequency. Much like a boxer taking repeated blows to the head, rapidly pulsing cellphones signal permanent brain damage. A study by Dr. Peter Franch found unequivocally that “cells are permanently damaged by cellular phone frequencies.” This cellular damage, Franch noted, is maximized at low dosage – and “inherited unchanged, from generation to generation.”

….the production of histamine, which triggers bronchial spasms, is nearly doubled after exposure to mobile phone transmissions. Cellphones also reduce the effectiveness of anti-asthmatic drugs, and retard recovery from illness.

…. 217 Hz spikes are very close to the frequencies of human cell membranes.

…..because cancer takes decades to develop, it will be another 10 or 20 years before “mobiles” manifest a big bonanza in brain tumors. But he adds, we’re already seeing “acute effects that are noticed within minutes of using a cell phone.”

After two minutes’ conversation, a cell phone’s digitized impulses disable the safety barrier that isolates the brain from destructive proteins and poisons in the blood.

…If you must pack a cell phone, treat it like a loaded pistol. Keep it turned off. Don’t carry it near ovaries, testicles, or the heart. For partial protection, buy an antenna shield. Limit calls to one-minute, six to 10 minutes a month. Never fire off a cellphone with children anywhere in sight.

A better bet is to facilitate the growth of organic telephone networks with lots of fibre. Instead of more microwave towers, “We should be wiring up our cities with fibre-optic cables to provide Internet, fax, telephone, radio and television at very high quality,” Cherry urges, “rather than saturating our cities with the microwave, radiowave and low frequency signals all the time.”

When it comes to cells, consciousness and cell phones, every call is collect. How can convenience count more than cancer? What is gained by being in constant contact with disembodied voices, while being “out of touch” with the friends and neighbours around us? Are we comfortable having our location traced by monitoring authorities?

Unless we start voting with our wallets, consumer complacency could prove as species-limiting as corporate cynicism.

“Microwave frequencies are the same as those used in radar and your microwave oven,” … “You wouldn’t think of sticking your head in the oven, but there is no hesitation to putting the cell phone to your ear.”

“There is a group of mammals, both Dolphins and Whales, that appear to be connecting for interaction with humans.  They are choosing from the vast waters which cover this planet, to swim VERY CLOSE to shores, making themselves available for interaction.  There are also some very specific energized areas of our planet to which people seem to be drawn.  In a heightened energy field, no different from a football stadium during a game, where energy is flowing on the field and in the stands, there is intense energy flow available. I have yet to meet the person who for whatever reason, went out and engaged with dolphins a few times, that hasn’t come away with a sense that they are “changed.” They feel changed because these mammals have at the very least in our collected data, been able to emit frequencies both audible, and we believe, beyond the threshold of audibility that induce in us a changed energy field, and changed brain wave state after interaction.  That, very simply put, is a healing interaction.  There is a change, and it registers in the individual as enjoyable and beneficial. The human organism achieves a sense of serenity, well being, reported loss of pain, release of anxiety, and relief from depression.  One other thing… It is fun.  So far, the fountain of youth seems to be the response pattern of joy, laughter…healing frequencies and these are being given to us as the gift of interaction, of sharing our fields.”

What is Pitch, Loudness and Quality of Sound? September 22, 2006

Pitch

This is how high or low a sound seems. A bird makes a high pitch. A lion makes a low pitch.

Pitch and loudness are two ways that sounds are different. Another way is in quality. Some sounds are pleasant and some are a noise.Compare the two waves on the right.A pleasant sound has a regular wave pattern. The pattern is repeated over and over. But the waves of noise are irregular. They do not have a repeated pattern.

Light, Color and Electromagnetic Frequency September 21, 2006

…”The scientific notion of photons begins with the fact that these elementary particles of energy display two seemingly contradictory behaviors: One behavior has to do with how they act as members of a group (in a wavefront) and the other relates to how they behave in isolation (as discrete particles).”

“An individual photon may be thought of as a packet of waves cork-screwing rapidly through space. Each packet is an oscillation along two perpendicular axes of force – the electrical and the magnetic. Because light is an oscillation, wave-particles interact with each other.

“One way of understanding the dual-nature of light is to realize that wave after wave of photons affect our telescopes – but individual photons are absorbed by the neurons in our eyes.”…….. “Stars (such as our Sun) exist because space-time does more than simply transmit light as waves. Somehow – still unexplained-1 – space-time causes matter too. And one thing distinguishing light from matter is that matter has “mass” while light has none….”

….”In relationship to light, matter can be opaque or transparent – it can absorb or refract light. Light can pass into matter, through matter, reflect off matter, or be absorbed by matter. When light passes into matter, light slows – while its frequency increases. When light reflects, the path it takes changes. When light is absorbed, electrons are stimulated potentially leading to new molecular combinations. But even more significantly, when light passes through matter – even without absorption – atoms and molecules vibrate the space-time continuum and because of this, light can be stepped down in frequency….”

…”In addition to describing the gravitational effects of matter on space-time, Einstein performed an extremely elegant investigation into the influence of light associated with the photo-electric effect. Before Einstein, physicists believed light’s capacity to affect matter was based primarily on “intensity”. But the photo-electric effect showed that light effected electrons on the basis of frequency as well…….In addition to describing the gravitational effects of matter on space-time, Einstein performed an extremely elegant investigation into the influence of light associated with the photo-electric effect.. showed that light effected electrons on the basis of frequency as well. Thus red light – regardless of intensity – fails to dislodge electrons in metals, while even very low levels of violet light stimulate measurable electrical currents. Clearly the rate at which light vibrates has a power all its own.”

http://www.universetoday.com/am/publish/where_does_visible_light.html?2512005

“Light waves also come in many frequencies. The frequency is the number of waves that pass a point in space during any time interval, usually one second. It is measured in units of cycles (waves) per second, or Hertz (Hz). The frequency of visible light is referred to as color, and ranges from 430 trillion Hz, seen as red, to 750 trillion Hz, seen as violet. Again, the full range of frequencies extends beyond the visible spectrum, from less than one billion Hz, as in radio waves, to greater than 3 billion billion Hz, as in gamma rays.”

“As noted above, light waves are waves of energy. The amount of energy in a light wave is proportionally related to its frequency: High frequency light has high energy; low frequency light has low energy. Thus gamma rays have the most energy, and radio waves have the least. Of visible light, violet has the most energy and red the least.”

“Light not only vibrates at different frequencies, it also travels at different speeds. Light waves move through a vacuum at their maximum speed, 300,000 kilometers per second or 186,000 miles per second, which makes light the fastest phenomenon in the universe. Light waves slow down when they travel inside substances, such as air, water, glass or a diamond. The way different substances affect the speed at which light travels is key to understanding the bending of light, or refraction…”

“So light waves come in a continuous variety of sizes, frequencies and energies. We refer to this continuum as the electromagnetic spectrum …visible light occupies only one-thousandth of a percent of the spectrum.”

“Rupert Sheldrake describes our bodies as “nested hierarchies of vibrational frequencies” which appear as discreet systems functioning within larger more complicated systems, which themselves are contained within even larger and more complex vibrational structures. In fact, you can view the whole universe in this way, from sub-atomic particles, to the most intricate life forms, to the nebulae and galaxies themselves — all are resonating fields of pulsating energy in constant interaction with one another.it becomes quite plausible that externally imposed vibration can have quite an influence on our physiology….every form, with its unique shape, size and density, vibrates within its own specific range of frequencies…

“…the beat frequencies associated with states of deep meditation are quite prevalent in such ancient ritual instruments as Tibetan “singing bowls”. These pulsations tend to quiet brainwave activity from our more normally active Beta states (around 14 – 20 Hz.) to the Theta and Delta states where predominant brainwave activity may drop to a range from 8 Hz. to as low as 0.5 Hz. in deepest meditative states.
“In our normal active (Beta) state, the sensory currents flow throughout our body and out into the world gathering perceptions. We process these physical, mental, and emotional sensations and navigate our environment accordingly, totally unaware of this subtle energy outflow.”…..“Over time, as one masters the ability to sustain focused attention at the third eye, the sounds become clearer and more powerful: a resounding bell being struck, a conch shell being blown, the beating of a large drum, the playing of harps, the flute, and finally a sound similar to bagpipes. It is interesting to note that human cultures the world over have created musical instruments which mimic these subtle sounds, perhaps as archetypal echoes reminding us from whence we have come, and as guideposts for our long journey back home.”

“This is the same path that has been navigated by the great masters, saints and teachers from all sacred traditions throughout the ages. In the Sufi lineage, it has been described in detail in the poems of Rumi, and the writings of Kabir and Hafiz. In the Western mystery schools it was revealed by Pythagoras, Socrates and Plato, to name but a few. These teachings describe a “souljourn” that is laid out within the template of our own bodies, and is therefore universal. It is a true science of sacred sound which is precise in its application, yet absolutely non-denominational in approach. If one is truly ready and willing, it can direct the courageous soul on a step-by-step process of emancipating one’s own consciousness!”

What is Healing by Sound Frequencies or Waves? September 12, 2006

“We can say that everything is made up of energy at various frequencies, that all things in nature vibrate to sound, light, color and resonate to same frequencies. Sound frequencies effect everything about us and correct vibrational frequencies can be used to heal and balance our bodies.””The body is just energy vibrating at different rates and frequencies. The chakra’s, bones, systems, organs, tissues, all possess a different resonant frequencies and are all vibrating at different rates creating a unique sound. Each person has a unique matrix of frequencies and tones, just like their own signature sound frequency.”

“When an organ or part of the body is vibrating out of tune or non harmoniously, it is called “dis-ease” or disease. Sound healing is all about identifying which frequencies are causing imbalance by being dissonant, out of balance, weak or diffused.”

“Sound healing works on the belief that the human body is not solid. Rather it is energy that is held together by sound. Any disease therefore indicates that some sound has gone out of tune. Sound is used in many forms to heal and balance energies, each chakra relates to a musical note and each color corresponds to one of the charka in our body.”

Playing a same note on a didgeridoo and other instruments will sound different due to the presence of higher frequency harmonics and overtones unique to each musical instrument. Speed: the horizontal speed of a point on a wave as it propagates in meters per second. The speed of sound waves in air is about 300 m/s.

Ancient Cultural and Sacred Sounds

Many ancient cultures recognize the importance of music and sound as a healing power.

*The Tibetans still use bells, chimes, bowls, and chanting as the foundation of their spiritual practice.
*In Indonesian traditional thinking, the Game lan is sacred and is believed to have supernatural power. The Gamelan, Gong and drum are used in ceremonies to uplift and send messages.
*The Australian Aboriginals and Native American shamanism use vocal toning and repetitive sound vibration with instruments created from nature in sacred ceremony to adjust any imbalance of the spirit, emotions or physical being.
*In Ancient Egypt, the Priests knew how to use vowel sounds to resonate their energy centers or chakra’s. There is a direct link between different parts of the body and specific sounds.”

What is a Unified Field? September 12, 2006

“Unified energy fields are structured according to a ratio described by the ancients as the golden mean, or golden section. This ratio of 1.618 to 1, can be identified in many structures within the natural world, such as geometric forms, energy fields, and the well formed human body, as represented in Michelangelo’s sculpture, David. The overtones that are generated by full spectrum harmonic sound exhibit these same mathematical ratios of the golden mean. There is a synergy therefore among fundamental building blocks of the created world (harmonic sound, light, unified energy fields, and the mathematical ratios of the golden mean).

Within a spiral drawn according to the golden mean, triangles, squares and pentagrams can be perfectly connected. Adding to these basic geometric units, we construct more complex forms, such as the dodecahedron, which is the pattern for DNA, the fundamental structure of the building blocks of life. So harmonic sound (the lower octave of light) creates a unified energy field, an organized intelligence, which is a key to understanding the nature of matter and movement of energy within our world.”
