“There have been many studies in the literature reported by a variety of investigators using a large number of different in vitro systems which have suggested that cellular signal transduction pathways are affected by EMF. This finding is quite expected since the signal transduction pathways receive both physical and biological information from other cells, as well as the environment, and transmit them in a cellularly appropriate fashion to produce the biochemical signals that regulate cellular functions. The electric field is attenuated within the cell but is amplified across the plasma membrane; therefore, in the absence of a clear indication that the magnetic field alone is responsible for all observed EMF effects, we must hypothesize that recognition and amplification of the information carried in the EMF signal is the domain of the plasma membrane and its signaling systems.”

“There is reasonable agreement as well on which early signaling pathways may be affected. The agreement, however, does not extend to a consensus regarding whether or not EMF effects at the in vivo level can be directly ascribed to any one pathway.”

Definitions

The properties and effects of non-ionising radiations are very diverse. For the purpose of this Policy non-ionising radiations include:

Extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 0 Hz (static fields) to 3 kHz, including the 50 Hz electric and magnetic fields associated with the domestic mains electricity supply such as in domestic electrical appliances, electricity supply substations and overhead power lines.

Radiofrequency (RF) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 3 kHz to 300 GHz, which is produced by artificial sources such as visual display units and mobile phones.

Microwave (MW) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range 1 GHz to 300 GHz, which is produced by artificial sources such as in microwave ovens and by microwave communication devices. (This radiation is now considered part of Radiofrequency radiation.)

Infrared (IR) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 700 nm and 1 mm, which is present in sunlight and produced by artificial sources such as electric radiator heaters.

Visible light

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 400 nm (blue) and 700 nm (red), which is present in sunlight and produced by numerous artificial sources, including lasers.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation

Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 100 nm and 400 nm, which is present in sunlight as well as produced by artificial sources such as arc welding and sterilization lamps.

  "In art processes, noise can be caused by vibration, forging,

woodworking and other machinery, pneumatic tools, exhaust fans,

etc.  In particular, old or improperly maintained equipment tends

to create more noise.  In general, if someone has to raise their

voice to be heard by another person one to two feet away, then

logarithmic scale.  In this scale, 90 dB is ten times more

also create problems due to vibration.  Raynaud's phenomenon,

which is also called "white fingers" or "dead fingers", affects

the circulation of the fingers, causing them to turn white from

lack of blood and to lose sensation.  Vibration can cause this,

particularly with simultaneous exposure to cold, for example,

from the air blast of pneumatic tools.  This condition is

initially temporary, but can spread to the whole hand and cause

‘As fiber optics continues to spread throughout broadband communication plants, and new fiber equipment is beginning to feature higher power outputs, many safety and training professionals in the industry are re-energizing their fiber optic training efforts. Kevin Wilkes, director of field services for Integration Technologies, says that while fiber optic technology continues to change, fiber optic safety issues have not. In fact, he believes new technology only underscores the importance of long-term safety training that needs a healthy dose of fear to succeed.

“I think probably 99 percent of the concerns about safety involving fiber have not changed with technology,” says Wilkes. “I think they’ve been amplified by higher launch powers and connectivity. But, the basis is still there for problems with the eyes.

Advantages of Fiber Optic Systems

“Fiber optic transmission systems – a fiber optic transmitter and receiver, connected by fiber optic cable – offer a wide range of benefits not offered by traditional copper wire or coaxial cable. These include:1. The ability to carry much more information and deliver it with greater fidelity than either copper wire or coaxial cable.

2. Fiber optic cable can support much higher data rates, and at greater distances, than coaxial cable, making it ideal for transmission of  serial digital data.

3. The fiber is totally immune to virtually all kinds of interference, including lightning, and will not conduct electricity. It can therefore   come in direct contact with high voltage electrical equipment and power lines. It will also not create ground loops of any kind.

Advice for People with Hearing Aids or Implanted Hearing Devices

“Before you buy a cell phone, you should try different brands and models to see which phone works best for you…People who wear hearing aids or have implanted hearing devices may experience some difficulties when trying to use cell phones. Some cell phones cause radio frequency interference with hearing aids, so the user hears high-pitched whistling sounds, buzzes, or static.”

“Fortunately, both cell phones and hearing aids are improving. Some phones have lower radio frequency (RF) emissions or different technology that can reduce the unwanted effects on hearing aids….”

“…On July 10, 2003, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) modified the exemption for wireless phones under the Hearing Aid Compatibility Act of 1988. This means that the FCC will require cell phone makers to produce several models that are designed to be compatible with hearing aids.”

Analog – A signaling method that uses continuous changes in the amplitude or frequency of a radio transmission to convey information. It relies on a continuous (rather than pulsed as in digital) electrical signal that varies in amplitude or frequency in response to changes of sound, light, position, etc., impressed on a transducer in the sending device; opposite of digital.

“After two minutes’ conversation, a cell phone’s digitized impulses disable the safety barrier (blood-brain-barrier) that isolates the brain from destructive proteins and poisons in the blood. Professor Leif Salford, the neurologist who carried out the research for this finding, said “It seems that molecules such as proteins and toxins can pass out of the blood, while the phone is switched on, and enter the brain. We need to bear in mind diseases such as MS and Alzheimer’s are linked to proteins being found in the brain.” Startled by $4 billion a year in extra claims among cell phone-wielding drivers, North American insurers did a double-take that found simply juggling phones is not causing a 600% increase in accidents over other drivers busy shaving, applying makeup, tuning radios, taming pets, making out, pouring coffee, retrieving dropped cigarettes, talking and gesturing to passengers, or actually steering the vehicle.  Instead of just another dangerous distraction, tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy found that using a cell phone severely impairs memory and reaction times. Hands-free mobile speakerphones cause even more crashes because they typically emit 10-times more brainwave interference than handheld units. For all drivers dialing out, University of Toronto investigators report that the heightened probability of cracking up your car persists for up to 15-minutes after completing a call.”

“That’s comparable to the risk of crashing while driving dead drunk exclaims Dr. Chris Runball, chairman of the B.C. Medical Association’s emergency medical services committee. Reeling from “dial-a-collision” costs, the government of British Columbia may join England, Spain, Israel, Switzerland and Brazil in restricting or banning the use of cell phones by drivers. In New Zealand, cell phone towers are prohibited on school property because of possible health effects. But Health Canada regulations ignore the hidden hazards of cell-wrenching cell phones, which send pulsed signals through the skull in a process one expert likens to “jackhammers on the brain.” “Safety Code 6” looks only at microwaves burning skin. Basically, Health Canada claims if it can’t cook you, it can’t hurt you, its like saying cigarettes aren’t dangerous unless they burn you. Carrying similar risks of long-term lethality, and strangely just as legal, cell phone addiction mirrors the prestigious early allure of smoking  – as well as an immensely profitable industry’s steadfast denial of risk and responsibility. As poisonous as cigarette smoke and even harder to corral, the cell phone’s second-hand microwave and radio-frequency (RF) pollution pose invisible but significant risks to bystanders–particularly children riding in cars that transmit amplified cell phone signals through their steel structure. Cell phone transmissions damage the ability of white blood cells to ward off infectious disease by disrupting the immune system’s electromagnetic communications. Dr. Neil Cherry has measured accelerated aging, increased cell death and cancers caused by radio frequency microwaves from cell phones and their relay towers.”

“Scalar waves are produced when two electromagnetic waves of the same frequency are exactly out of phase (opposite to each other) and the amplitudes subtract and cancel or destroy each other. The result is not exactly an annihilation of magnetic fields but a transformation of energy back into a scalar wave. This scalar field has reverted back to a vacuum state of potentiality. Scalar waves can be created by wrapping electrical wires around a figure eight in the shape of a möbius coil. When an electric current flows through the wires in opposite directions, the opposing electromagnetic fields from the two wires cancel each other and create a scalar wave.”
