“It is proposed that there is a group of disorders characterized by excessive low frequency EEG activity. For example:

Disorder Abbr. Reported Brainwave Characteristic
Attention Deficit ADHD Excess theta/beta ratio (Lubar 1991, etc.)
Chronic Fatigue Syndr CFS Slow alpha, excess theta (Lindenfeld et al 1996)
Minor Head Injury MHI Diffuse slow activity (Duffy et al. 1989, Ayers 1987, both also quoted in Byers, 1995)
Toxic Trauma TT Excess slow activity (Heuser 1994)
Premenstrual Syndrome PMS Excess delta, slow P300 (Toner 1995reported above)

Treatment of Slow Brainwave Disorders with Photic Stimulation
The preliminary trial reported above shows the efficacy of photic stimulation as a treatment for PMS. The treatment of ADHD with photic stimulation has been developed extensively by Harold Russell and his associates, using frequencies of 18 Hz and 10 Hz alternating for two minute periods, with demonstrable improvements in IQ scores and behavior (Russell and Carter, 1993). Many clinicians appear to be using photic stimulation informally for ADHD and the other slow brainwave disorders….Many neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) practitioners report successful treatment of some or all of these slow brainwave disorders. …A reasonable explanation that is commonly proposed for the above experimental and clinical results is that the key to treating these disorders (all characterized by excessive slow brainwave activity) is to speed up the brainwave frequency….Unfortunately there is evidence, both from photic stimulation research and from neurofeedback training, that undermines this brainwave frequency hypothesis.

In the trial of PMS and photic stimulation reported above, the patients were free to adjust the frequency of the flashing light at will, between 0.5 Hz and 50 Hz….Of those patients who achieved a greater than 50% reduction in symptoms, about half chose to operate the flashing light in the range of 5 to 10 Hz, ie, theta-alpha frequency, not beta frequency…. Hoffman et al. (1995) list six different neurofeedback protocols (including alpha training) that have been used successfully for minor head injury.”

Note that the frequency often chosen by the patients was close to the Schumann Wave frequency.

What are beneficial frequencies? August 10, 2006

We are made of energy. We carry a frequency, as does everything. It is how we can go into a room and know whether we feel comfortable, or not. Generally we feel comfortable with other things and people that resonate with us.

Some frequencies balance us. Others distort our energy. Some frequencies are healing. Others are disturbing.

We are affected by frequencies all the time. Circadian rhythms are from frequencies that affect us daily, moving in concert with the ocean waves and movements of planets.

The Institute for Heartmath made some important discoveries about musical frequencies in their research. Some tended to help the heart rhythm, others tended to make people feel unbalanced. Music like Mozart and some designer music helped the heart, whereas some new age music caused fatigue and heavy metal music create a lot of disturbance.

This is a very large subject.

Hopefully telephone companies and other manufacturer’s or electronic equipment will one day find ways to use beneficial frequencies.

What are heavy metals? August 10, 2006

The term heavy metal may have various more general or more specific meanings.

According to one definition, heavy metals are a group of elements between copper and bismuth on the periodic table of the elements—having specific gravities greater than 4.0. Living organisms require trace amounts of some heavy metals, including cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, strontium, and zinc, but excessive levels can be detrimental to the organism. Other heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium have no known vital or beneficial effect on organisms, and their accumulation over time in the bodies of mammals can cause serious illness. The pathway for toxic effects on humans is normally: (i) for the entry of heavy metals into the atmosphere as industrial stack gas; (ii) or to enter the soil as a soil contaminant; (iii) or to enter groundwater as a water pollutant; or to be deposited in ocean bottoms or bay mud, which materials at a later time be dredged to the surface.

Dr. Sherry Rogers, an MD who has helped many people with chemical sensitivities, claims that cell phones actually cause leakage of the blood-brain barrier.  “This membrane is designed to to protect our brains from toxic chemicals passing into it.   These radio frequency electromagnetic fields make the blood brain barrier so leaky, that even large proteins, like albumin, which happens to be the carrier for lots of drugs and chemicals, pass right through the blood brain barrier where they damage the neurons.  This leakage causes the onslaught of heavy metals into the brain and it happens within a few hours of exposure…it lasts as long as eight weeks after the exposure.  So lots of other environmental chemicals can sneak into the brain and stockpile during this time.”

The following research indicates that people may be affected by natural changes in electromagnetic frequencies, which can be corroborated by many people who feel climatic changes affecting them.  What questions does this raise for frequencies at even this low level that are artificially produced?  Why are so many children being diagnosed with attention problems?

The effects of extra-low-frequency atmospheric pressure oscillations on human mental activity.

Delyukov A, Didyk L.

Slight atmospheric pressure oscillations (APO) in the extra-low-frequency range below 0.1 Hz, which frequently occur naturally, can influence human mental activity. This phenomenon has been observed in experiments with a group of 12 healthy volunteers exposed to experimentally created APO with amplitudes 30-50 Pa in the frequency band 0.011-0.17 Hz. Exposure of the subjects to APO for 15-30 min caused significant changes in attention and short-term memory functions, performance rate, and mental processing flexibility. The character of the response depended on the APO frequency and coherence. Periodic APO promoted purposeful mental activity, accompanied by an increase in breath-holding duration and a slower heart rate. On the other hand, quasi-chaotic APO, similar to the natural perturbations of atmospheric pressure, disrupted mental activity. These observations suggest that APO could be partly responsible for meteorosensitivity in humans.

California did a study of its public schools and day care centers. They found too much exposure. However the cost of fixing it was high.

Money seems to be part of the issue in recognizing this issue. How much more will it take to deal with the effects if nothing is done?

When enough people are asking the question about whether there is a problem, how many people–in this case children–have to suffer before we can answer yes?

There is already mounting evidence. Science doesn’t even begin to ask the question until it is too late for some folks. I’m happy for science. But sometimes the scientists are the last to know. It takes time, planning, successful funding and community pressure before science can come up with a test to prove what we already know.

EPA’s advice: practice “prudent avoidance.”

1. Measure your home, work and school environments with a Gauss meter.

2. Measure EMFs inside and outside your home.

3. Avoid playing near power lines, transformers, radar domes and microwave towers.

4. Avoid any area where the field is above 1 mG.

5. Measure the EMF’s from appliances when they are operating.

6. Measure the EMF’s from appliances when they are turned off. Some appliances (like TVs) are still drawing current even when they are off. Microwaves should ALWAYS be unplugged when not in use.

7. Do not use an electric blanket.

8. Do not use a waterbed unless it is unplugged before you go to bed. Even though there is no magnetic field, there may still be a high electric field unless it is unplugged.

9. Distance yourself at least 6 feet away from a color TV.

10. Rearrange your office so that you are not exposed to EMFs from the sides and backs of electric appliances and computers. Put a biopro chip on each of the items.  (http://www.mybiopro.com/jeannine)

11. Place all major electrical appliances, such as computers, TVs, refrigerators etc, against outside walls to avoid creating an EMF field in the next room.

12. Sit as far from your computer as you comfortably can.. Computer monitors vary greatly in the strength of their EMFs.

13. Chech your computer, printer, scanner, fax machine etc. with a gauss meter. Protect each item with bioprochips.  (http://www.mybiopro.com/jeannine

14. Keep a distance from your microwave oven, or better yet, stop using it!

15. Move all electrical appliances at least 6 feet from your bed. Take the TV out of the bedroom altogether!

16. Eliminate wires running under your bed. Eliminate dimmers and 3-way switches.

17. Cordless appliances such as electric toothbrushes and razors have emf’s. Use traditional items or put bioprochips on them.

18. Consider giving up your quartz-analog watch. It radiates pulsating EMFs along your acupuncture meridians.  Older mechanical windup watches are safer if you need a watch.

19. Wear as little jewelry as possible. Take jewelry off at night.

20. Some people have metal sensitivity which can be aggravated if touching the skin.

21. Measure everything with a gauss meter.

22. EMFs pass through walls. If you see high readings on your Gauss meter, it could could be radiating from the next room…or from outside.

Abstract

We investigated whether a 2-month dietary supplementation of antioxidants, in the form of blueberry phytochemicals, could reverse or retard the age-related decline in temporal processing speed observed in the aged rat. To this end, extracellular single unit responses to frequency modulated (FM) sweeps were recorded in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of aged rats that had been placed on either a blueberry-supplemented or control diet 2 months prior to the physiological recordings. Results showed that most cells recorded from the blueberry-fed rats responded most vigorously to fast FM sweeps, similar to that observed in young rats. In contrast, the majority of cells recorded from the control rats showed a preference for slow FM sweep rates. These results suggest that age-related changes in temporal processing speed in A1 may be reversed by dietary supplementation of blueberry phytochemicals.

While this study does not mention emf’s or radiation, blueberries are very likely to be one of the foods that are helpful in rebalancing the body.

Metal Roofs worry me. It’s just intuition. I’ve been trying to find research about them and no one seems to have thought of it yet. Does anyone have any information or experience with how a metal roof would be affected by emf’s?
