“The damaging effects caused by exposure to even low-level radiation may extend further than previously thought. A new study shows that radiation not only damages the genetic material of exposed mice, but is related to an increase in damaged DNA for at least two successive generations of the exposed animals’ offspring….Researchers say the findings could have significant implications for evaluating the risks of radiation exposure in the future….Scientists in England say they were completely surprised to find the damage extended all the way to the second-generation offspring. The grandchildren had the same increase in germ-line mutations as the mice that were exposed. Germ-line cells, such as sperm, are involved in reproduction. The effects of radiation exposure on these cells can cause birth defects.”
